On February 20th
the Honourable Bronwyn Pike announced a $500,000 Community
Support Fund grant towards Strathdon's Community Centre, due for completion
by the end of 2002.
Ms Pike, the Minister for State Community Services said the centre would
help Strathdon become part of the surrounding community. "We
put up a lot of walls and barriers in the community. We need to be creative
in the way we can break down those walls." Ms Pike told those attending
the announcement. Strathdon Redevelopment Appeal Chairman Mr Trevor
Nixon said the announcement was marvellous.
"It's the sort of thing that really lifts us in what we're doing
and makes us determined to go on," Mr Nixon said.
The Community Centre is part of Stage II of Strathdon's three-stage
$18 million redevelopment and will host programs from the University
of the Third Age, Probus and Life Activities Nunawading.
Other community, school and youth groups are also being encouraged to
utilise the new facility, which will offer meeting rooms, an Internet
Cafe, kiosk, a kitchen and other multi-purpose rooms, when it opens.
To date Strathdon has raised more than $14 million towards the
overall development, through philanthropic trusts, government funding,
community donations and the organisations own cash reserves, but $4
million is still needed to complete the project.
"We're trying to get the business community and the City of Whitehorse
to help us raise the $4 million," Ms Maxine Miller,
from Strathdon's Development Office said, "We need a lot of support
from the business community." |
