Guest Artist - Ian Johnston

Guest Artist, Ian Johnston

Featured works from guest artist, Ian Johnston

Ian Johnston is a Minister of the Uniting Church. He began developing a natural interest in drawing to create cartoon and other graphic illustrations for his work in preaching, teaching, drama and story telling. From 1990 to 1994 he took time out from full-time ministry to work in the medium of kiln-formed glass and welded steel, making stained glass windows and other commissioned works for churches. Following his return to full-time parish ministry, Ian adopted watercolour as his principal medium. He paints in his spare time and has been water colouring (on and off) for about twenty years, He has received tuition from Melbourne watercolourists Margaret Cowling and Malcolm Beattie.

Ian considers watercolour to be a difficult and challenging medium with a mind of its own. He remains dedicated to it because of the many surprises and the excitement it generates. Ian held a successful exhibition of paintings in May 2004 to raise money for the Uniting Church SHARE Appeal.

Judge's Comment:
A solid drawing with interesting shapes and varied technique which provides lots of entertainment for the eye. A good composition using diagonals to lead the viewer into the work and contrasting lights with strong darks makes for a powerful watercolour statement.

Judge's Comment:
A vibrant and exciting use of colour. A strong and simple composition which leads the eye up through the dark diagonal to the interesting light on the cliff edge. All elements in this painting reinforce its strength making it an imposing landscape.

SECTION 2 - BEST WATERCOLOUR

ON THE BEACH, BLAIRGOWRIE

Malcolm Beattie, On the Beach, Blairgowrie

Judge's Comment:
The (seemingly) casual groupings of people look very natural and unrehearsed. The feeling of sun is enhanced by dark accents and flicks of light. Also, the artist has responded to the subject by painting in a lively and spontaneous manner well suited to the carefree mood.

SECTION 3 - BEST OTHER MEDIUM
$500 donated by Herb and Evelyn Fleming
  Eleanor Griffiths
CITRUS

Eleanor Griffiths, Citris
Judge's Comment:
This painting has an unusual compositional cropping which brings the viewer right into the bowl of oranges creating an intimate feeling with the subject. Lovely use of colour with the harmony of repeated curves make a beautiful image.
