Strathdon
Day Therapy Centre conducts a special
program for people living in the community who have reduced balance
or are at risk of falling.
We have had a Balance Group since January 1999 and the program is
conducted by the Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Registered
Nurse and Allied Health Assistant.
The Aims and Objectives of
the Group are to:
implement Falls
Prevention strategies with emphasis on intrinsic factors;
improve muscle
strength of lower limbs;
improve dynamic standing
balance;
improve endurance;
monitor gait;
identify any risk of falling
other than physical factors.
Who Can Attend?
People who:
are unsteady when walking;
are referred to Strathdon
Day Therapy Centre by their doctor;
can walk independently
with or without walking aids.
Format
Two groups
with a maximum of twelve clients in each group are conducted on Tuesday
and Wednesday aftrnoons from 1.00pm
to 3.00pm.
The program consists of ten consecutive sessions of circuit exercises,
falls prevention education and home hazard assessment. 1.00pm - 2.30pm: Circuit Excercises 2.30pm - 3.00pm: Afternoon tea and Falls Prevention
education.
How do I Know if I Have Balance
Problems?
If I:
tend to grab something
for support when standing up and walking;
have a history of recent
falls, even without serious injuries;
tend to lose balance when
suddenly turning or talking during walking;
find it difficult to stand
on one leg, even for a few seconds;
I may have
balance problems.
Cost
The cost is
$8.00 per session (plus $2.00 each way for
transport, if required).
If there is a problem of financial hardship, Strathdon Community will
be happy to negotiate an alternative arrangement regarding the cost
.
