| SERVICES |
Mingara Day Activity Centre was established in 1984 to provide day respite care for people with a confirmed diagnosis of senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type and related disorders, plus support for their carers. Mingara Day Activity Centre Planned Activity Group |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Mingara
aims to enhance the quality of life for its clients by the provision
of an activities program that encourages each individual with mental
and physical stimulation, awareness of their own identity and a sense
of belonging in the community regardless of their cultural, linguistic,
social and/or economic background. Mingara is an Aboriginal word meaning 'The House of the Happy Spirit'. Our services strive to achieve excellence in the level of support that we offer people with dementia and the people who care for them, to enable them to continue living in the wider community for as long as possible. On three days per week, between 12 to 14 clients attend Mingara between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. There is considerable flexibility, which allows us to cater for the individual needs of our clients and their carers. Clients visit the centre weekly for periods ranging from two to fifteen hours. Staff and volunteers are highly skilled and are chosen for their empathy when working with people with memory loss. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| An
activities program is offered to clients and is planned around the
expectations that any non-impaired person living in the community
would enjoy when visiting a social venue away from home. We strive
to minimise any sense of institution or incarceration, or of 'being
minded', and instead provide a warm, positive, secure environment
where each client feels that they are valued as an individual regardless
of their cognitive or physical deficits. Most but not all clients attending Mingara suffer from moderate to severe dementia. People in the earlier stages of their illness are often resistant to day care, but their carers may still suffer from high levels of stress and isolation. Carers of clients attending the Day Activity Centre are offered advice, education, supportive counselling, referral to ongoing services and membership to the Carers Support Group, which meets every second Monday, Thursday and fourth Friday fo the month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. |
