To facilitate functioning and independence in activities of daily living
To reinforce self-esteem and confidence
To raise awareness of aids for daily living, exercises and safety
To improve and maintain posture
To give advice on walking aids to ensure safe and efficient walking
To provide mutual support for clients and carers
To provide a forum for clients and carers to discuss their concerns and share information

What is Parkinson's Disease?
Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological disease. The main symptoms are:

  Tremor (or shaking)
  Slowness of movement
Rigidity (or stiffness of the muscles)
  Difficulty starting movement

Parkinson’s Disease can affect all normal movements including walking, talking, writing, swallowing and day to day activities.

People who have Parkinson’s Disease are affected in different ways. Some people experience problems with memory and thought processes, while for others the problems are mainly with movements.

How Can Therapy Help?
In conjunction with medical management, i.e. regular monitoring by doctor/neurologist and taking appropriate medication, therapy can help to maintain skills and promote independence.

People who attend our groups find it helps to share their concerns with other people who really understand – because they also have Parkinson’s Disease.

Twice each year, group members and their families are invited to attend a Parkinson’s Information Day, which includes a speaker from Parkinson’s Victoria.

We also offer special sessions for carers of people with Parkinson’s Disease.
