The visit of Prime Minister John Howard to Strathdon Community in July was a strong indicator of the growing importance of Aged Care issues in Australia.

Prime Minister Howard, whose mother-in-law resides in a Uniting Church Nursing Home in New South Wales, extended high praise to Strathdon Community and the Uniting Church for their continuing developments in the area of Aged Care.

"This great facility (Strathdon Community) operates under the edict of the Uniting Church, and the Uniting Church is providing wonderful aged care facilities".

Mr Howard, who was accompanied by then Liberal candidate for Aston Mr Chris Pearce, in his speech before a large gathering of residents, volunteers, staff and the media, expressed his interest in Aged Care issues in Australia and the work undertaken at Strathdon.

"I’ve learnt something of the expansion plans for this facility. I will welcome an opportunity of sitting down with Board and Resident representatives, along with Chris Pearce, to talk about some of the issues that confront this community," Mr Howard said.

Mr Pearce expressed his support of Strathdon, saying "I was very impressed with your wonderful development plans here. That is why I thought it would be fantastic for the Prime Minister to come up and see the Redevelopment Plans and to understand exactly the sort of progress that has been taking place here."

Following the media conference Mr Howard and Mr Pearce met privately with Strathdon CEO Austin Paterson and invited guests, to further discuss Aged Care issues affecting Strathdon Community.

Whether these private talks have made clearer to the Prime Minister the issues affecting Aged Care organisations in Australia, only time will tell.
