Redevelopment |
| |
The $20 million
redevelopment of Strathdon’s Jolimont Road site has been one
of the most ambitious projects undertaken in the Community’s history.
Through diligent financial management Strathdon was able to contribute
$12 million towards the redevelopment. |

The Challenge: |
| |
Life
expectancy in Australia is now among the highest in the world. With
60% of our region's population aged 55 years and over, Strathdon
Community, which services this growing number of seniors, urgently
needed to expand its aged care services and facilities.
Providing innovative
care that promotes healthy ageing is one of the greatest challenges
facing the nation today.
Strathdon Community is a special place.
A place where outstanding quality aged care is not so much a philosophy,
but a way of life. |

$3.3 Million
Raised |
| |
Since
the launch of the Redevelopment Appeal in March 2001, over $3
million has been raised from the community, philanthropic trusts
and marketing of facilities. However, it will take a further
community investment to defray the costs
on borrowing over $4 million.
The redevelopment of Strathdon
Community has been in three key stages, thus ensuring that
current residents remained on site and were not disrupted by construction
work. |

Stage
1: Completed September 2001 |
| |
The East and
West Wings to the Nursing Home, as well as eight new Independent
Living Units were completed and occupied, the Independent Living Units
being configured for the time being as hostel accommodation. |

Stage 2:
Completed February 2003 |

The demolition
of Strathdon Hostel (19) and construction of the new Community Centre
was commenced in October 2001. The Community Centre and the Richard
E McGarvie Hostel are now completed and the residents have relocated
into the new premises.
The Community Centre forms the platform for the Community
Partnership Initiative and is regarded as the centrepiece
of the redevelopment of Strathdon. It houses community facilities,
including a variety of meeting and multi-purpose rooms, Cafe, Kiosk,
administration and kitchen services. The objective is to develop
a totally integrated community complex that facilitates both
formal and incidental interaction between residents and the broader
community. Redevelopment gallery, click here. |

Stage 3:
Completed February 2004 |

The last and
final stage of the redevelopment project was marked with the return
of residents into the Nursing Home on Monday 8th September, 2003.
Work associated with services and infrastructure was then completed
to the lower ground area of the Nursing Home which enabled the Day
Therapy Centre to occupy the newly expanded area.
The official opening of the Redevelopment
Project was held on the 10th March 2004.
