Planning in advance can guide your future medical treatment and give those who are caring for you the opportunity to respect your choices.

Respecting Patient Choices
An Advance Care Planning Program
"Respecting Patient Choices (RPC) is an advance care planning program that assists individuals, families and health professionals in making decisions about future medical treatment. It focuses on developing a system of training, practices, and policies so that effective advance care planning and end-of-life decision making becomes the routine - the expected care - throughout the Eastern Health community.

Based on the successful Respecting Choices Program originating at the Gunderson Lutheran Medical Centre in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the Respecting Patient Choices program commenced in Eastern Health in June 2003." 1

Strathdon is now part of the pilot program run by Eastern Health. Selected staff at Strathdon are trained RPC Consultants and are able to assist people to consider and discuss end-of-life issues. An RPC Consultant assists the individual and family in making choices about future medical treatment by discussing options and completing an Advance Care Plan. An Advance Care Plan is a way of recording and communicating the individual’s wishes about their future health care.
