| Sir Arvi has already officiated
at the opening of the recent Annual Art Show and has indicated he
will be active in sharing with our residents the ongoing activites
of Strathdon Community. Sir Arvi Parbo was born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1926 and received his early education there and in Germany. After attending the Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany from 1946 to 1948 he migrated to Australia in 1949. He graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering in 1955 and is a Chartered Engineer. Sir Arvi joined Western Mining Corporation Limited as an Underground Surveyor at Bullfinch Western Australia in 1956 and served as an Underground Manager at the Nevoria Mine from 1958 to 1960. He held the position of Technical Assistant to the Managing Director from 1950 to 1964 in Melbourne and after attending the Australian Administrative Staff College returned to Western Australia in 1964 as the Company's Deputy General Superintendent. He was appointed General Manager in 1968 and became a Director in 1970. He was appointed Deputy Managing Director in 1971 and became managing Director in 1971. In October 1974 Sir Arvi was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of Western Mining Corporation Limited, subsequently renamed WMC Limited. In June 1986 he relinquished this position and became executive Chairman. In 1990 he retired as an executive but was appointed non-executive Chairman and retired from this position in April 1999. Sir Arvi was Chairman of Alcoa of Australia Limited from 1978 to 1996, Chairman of Munich Reinsurance Company of Australia Limited from 1984 to 1998 and Chairman of Zurich Australian Insurance group from 1985 to 1998. He was appointed a Director of the Aluminium Company of America from 1980 to 1998, Hoechst Australian Investments from 1981 to 1997, Chase AMP Bank Limited from 1985 to 1991 and Sara Lee Corporation from 1991 to 1998. In 1987 Sir Arvi was appointed a Director of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited and was appointed Chairman in May 1989 until retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Degussa AG Supervisory Board from 1988 to 1993 and the PA Consulting Group Advisory Board from 1994 to 1999, Chairman of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Energy and Mining Advisory Group from 1999-2000 and a member of the Chase International Advisory Committee from 1983 - 2001. Sir Arvi is a Member of the Blake Dawson Waldron Advisory Board and the China International Trust and Investment Corporation International advisory Council. He was a Foundation Director of the Egon Zehnder Global Corporate Governance Advisory Board in 1998 and was appointed Director Emeritus in March 2000. In May 1989 Deakin University made Sir Arvi an Honorary Doctor of Science. In 1989 Monash University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Engineering and Curtin University of Technology appointed him an Honorary Doctor of Science. He was made a Knight Bachelor for services to industry in 1978 and was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1979. In 1990 Sir Arvi was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Sacred Treasure by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. In 1991 the National Australia Day Council honoured Sir Arvi with an award as an Australian Achiever for 1990. In June 1993 Sir Arvi was made a Companion of the Order of Australia . In February 2001 the President of the Republic of Estonia honoured Sir Arvi by awarding him the Order of the White Star. (see below). |

The Order of the White Star
was instituted in 1936 to commemorate the freedom fight of the Estonian
people. The Order of the White Star is awarded to give recognition
to accomplishments in civil service or local government work as well
as to foreigners for services to the Estonian State. The order comprises
seven classes. |
